Brand New Saddles
Every new Circle Y saddle is carefully oiled and finished with a protective topcoat before it leaves our shop. This means you won’t need to re-oil your saddle for about six months under normal riding conditions. However, if you ride frequently or in particularly dry or changing weather, an earlier oiling may be beneficial to keep the leather nourished and resilient.
Oiling and Conditioning
Use only high-quality leather oils and conditioners made specifically for saddles. Follow the product instructions carefully and apply them regularly to keep your leather soft, supple, and long-lasting. We recommend using a liquid, glycerin-based saddle soap to gently remove dirt, mud, mold, and mildew, followed by a leather conditioner to restore moisture.
Avoid using animal fats, olive oil, or mink oil, as these can darken or damage the leather over time.
Light or Show Saddles
For light-colored or show saddles, take extra care when oiling to preserve their appearance. Apply oil only to the underside of the leather rather than the top surface to prevent darkening. Always choose a leather conditioner specifically formulated for light leather, and test it in a small, inconspicuous area before full application.

Cleaning and Conditioning
Rough-out leather is naturally porous and behaves differently from the smooth, grain side of the hide. Because of its open texture, it will darken when treated with oils or conditioners — sometimes temporarily, sometimes permanently. To clean rough-out, use a stiff brush to remove dirt and restore the nap of the leather. For heavily soiled saddles, a wire brush can be used with care on all-rough-out areas to lift grime from the pores and bring back the suede-like finish.
If conditioning is needed, be aware that applying neatsfoot oil directly to rough-out will cause noticeable darkening at first, which typically lightens over time as the oil is absorbed. To minimize color change, apply a conditioner such as Doc Tucker’s Leather Conditioner to the back (grain) side of the leather instead. This method allows the product to soak through and nourish the leather without darkening the visible surface.
When Your Saddle Gets Wet
If your saddle becomes wet, clean any leather exposed to moisture or sweat and allow it to dry naturally in a cool, shaded place. Once dry, reapply oil or conditioner to restore flexibility and strength.
Avoid Heat and Sunlight
Never use direct sunlight, hair dryers, or artificial heat sources to speed up drying. Excessive heat can make leather brittle and cause permanent damage. Leather that has been scorched or burned in this way should no longer be used for riding.

Seating Leather
Keep your saddle’s seating leather clean and comfortable by removing dust and debris regularly with a vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth and clean water. If spills or spots occur, blot immediately to prevent them from soaking into the leather. Many minor stains will naturally fade after a few days, though some slight darkening is normal. Always allow leather to dry naturally — never expose it to direct heat or intense sunlight, as this can cause brittleness and damage.
Suede Leather
Suede requires a gentler approach. Use only cleaners specifically designed for suede leather to avoid altering its texture. Regularly dust or vacuum to remove surface dirt, then use a stiff brush to lift the nap and restore its natural softness. For small spots, gently wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid conditioners or oils of any kind — these can flatten or “glue down” the nap and permanently change the suede’s texture. Most general leather care products are not suitable for suede.
Routine Cleaning and Maintenance
Regular cleaning keeps your saddle in top condition and extends its life. Before you begin, unbuckle all straps and remove dust or dirt using an air compressor or a damp cloth. Because leather is porous, removing debris first prevents it from being ground into the surface during cleaning. Ideally, your saddle should be wiped down after each ride to keep it looking and performing its best. Consistent care not only preserves the appearance of your Circle Y saddle but also ensures lasting comfort and durability for years of riding ahead.
